HKHP Archive series: The Jewish Recreation Club

The Jewish Recreation Club (JRC) was established as an association in 1905 and expanded by Sir Elly Kadoorie in 1909. The JRC building survived the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong until two weeks prior to the termination of hostilities, when the club was destroyed by Japanese forces. After the war, the club was rebuilt by the Hong Kong Jewish Community and funded in part by the Kadoorie Family. Sir Horace Kadoorie was elected JRC President in 1950.

The records held in the HKHP archive chronicle the re-opening of the club in 1950 and further renovations and developments of the site until 1982. The collection includes architectural plans, meeting minutes and agendas, president’s speeches and reports of activities.

The collection also includes proposed additions to the club house in 1955, as well as annotated speeches given by Lawrence Kadoorie at Jewish Recreation Club Annual General Meetings in his capacity as President of the Hong Kong Jewish Community from 1959 to 1978.
